Last week, we were introduced to yet another additional feature that Instagram has to offer – IGTV.
It’s supposed to be something comparable to YouTube with it’s features mainly recording longer videos. Now is this something that is here to stay? We don’t know yet. What is it really about and is it beneficial to content creators like me. Let’s read on below.

↠ What is IGTV?
As we all know, Instagram is one of the biggest social media platform there is right now. It’s my personal favorite when it comes to advertising and promoting my brand. Last week, Instagram was so pleased to announce the newest addition to their features – the IGTV. It’s a head-on competitor for YouTube, which means we can now record up to an hour long videos. This was such a big shock to everyone since for the past years, there has never been a competitor, or even close, to YouTube.
It is built for vertical and full screen use.
IGTV gives you options to watch longer videos that are recommended for you, from the people that you already follow or popular. As soon as you launch the app, it automatically plays the videos on your feed.
↠ How does IGTV work?
Now keep in mind, this feature may not be available for newer or smaller accounts just yet. IGTV gets overwhelming at first, at least that’s how I felt the first time I used it but it gets easier and more fun as you practice.
I am basing these steps on the home screen of my Instagram app but if you have the stand alone, the process should be the same.
On your home screen, click the tv icon and it will take you to the videos recommended for you by default. From there you can choose which types of videos you want to watch.
When ready to set up your “channel“, click on your profile picture on the right side.
It will then show you your videos feed. This is where you can upload your video. Click on the “+” icon and upload your video.
Another thing to keep in mind, IGTV doesn’t have it’s own camera yet. When you record your long videos, you need to use your built-in camera on your phone and upload it to IGTV through your camera roll. It’s the only downside for now but I’m sure they will eventually add some more cool features (maybe include filters? 😉)
I personally love IGTV because as a content creator who is sick and tired of YouTube’s changes, this opens up a whole new opportunity. I also like the fact that it doesn’t have ads…yet, so watching video has never been better. I hope it stays this way, with no interruptions and hopefully they’ll add more features soon.
Do you have the IGTV yet? What do you think about it, let me know below.
