What Not To Wear When You’re Shopping For Your Engagement Ring

Have you been in your relationship for a while? Would you both consider solidifying your relationship right now? While formal ‘surprise’ proposals can seem a bit cheesy, the fun and romance of getting engaged will probably never go out of fashion. If you’ve been talking about the future and growing old together, then marriage is on the cards. So what are you waiting for? It’s time to go shopping for the ring!

When you head to the mall or the high street, it’s probably best to have a realistic budget in mind. You both want to please each other, but if you discuss and commit to a price, you won’t feel obliged to go over or settle for less than you wanted. Until you see ‘the one’, you might not be certain how much it could cost. This is why so many couples browse several jewelry stores before making a commitment. So what should you wear when undertaking such an important shopping expedition? Why not dress up for this special occasion!

Some of the best jewelers are outside of the malls. You may need to walk a fair distance between each one. Wearing comfortable shoes is best, but that doesn’t mean you need to dress down for this important purchase. Definitely avoid casual wear, as you want to gauge what the ring will look like with the outfits you wear most often. You’ll be showing it off at work, at your engagement party, and at the wedding when it’s paired with your wedding band.

Don’t wear elaborate press-on nails or delicate nail art. Even if it doesn’t get rubbed or damaged while trying on countless rings, it will steal focus from the one you love the most. Elegant but subtle is best. Try to use everyday lengths for your nails, so your hands feel as comfortable as they normally do.

Definitely don’t wear lots of layers and wool-wear. Jewelry stores often sell clocks and other valuable items that need to be kept at a regular temperature and humidity. If it’s cold outside, bring a jacket you can remove easily. If you are too hot when you’re trying on rings, your fingers are prone to swelling. You may not be able to wear your regular size or make a mistake with the ring size you need.

Just as you shouldn’t let yourself be too warm, being too cold can make your fingers feel cold. They can even be smaller than usual, causing the same problem with sizing. Worst of all, the ring might fall off a cold finger. If you really want to see if the style and cut of your ring suit your hand, then wear shorter sleeves so you can see your wrists as well.

Of course, some of the best designers and retailers are available online. You can browse at your leisure wearing whatever you want, and find designer gems like Verragio engagement rings that could be the perfect cut for you. You’ll be able to see a greater range browsing websites too.

Wherever you shop for your ring, consider a style that suits your tastes. Talk together about the kind of wedding bands you might both like so that you choose something that works well with it. Enjoy.

I did not go with my husband to get the engagement ring. It was actually a surprise.
But I was dressed-up when he proposed 🙂

I would never have thought of any of this, but so smart and you are so right about staying out of malls! I wrote a blog on eco-friendly engagement rings, and I am all about a secondhand diamond!

I’ve seen many people come in and choose a ring and then have to come back not long after to get it resized because of things like this. Thanks for sharing this great info!
